When we support our clients with a logo design, we ensure that they have every file type they may ever need, even if they do not need it at the moment.
It is important to know what each file type is and where you will need them in the future, such as on websites, printed marketing materials clothing, banners etc.
Here are the formats available and a little jargon-free explanation of each:
PNG (or Portable Network Graphic) – a transparent graphic for web and digital use. They are pixel-based and lose quality if scaled up from their original size.
SVG (or Scalable Vector Graphic) – a vector graphic is a computer image, which is scalable without loss of quality and compatible across web browsers and devices.
JPEG (or Joint Photographic Experts Group) – suitable for both print and web use but they do not have a transparent background and will lose quality if you scale them up.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) – a vector graphic, scalable to any size and perfect for printing services such as banners, clothing and signage.
PDF (Portable Document Format) – we supply a PDF as a reference document so you can see your vector logos using Adobe Acrobat software.
AI (Adobe Illustrator) – this is the master file vector graphic created and edited in Adobe Illustrator.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) – a transparent, pixel-based graphic for web use which can be animated.
WebP (Web Picture Format) – intended as a replacement for JPEG, PNG and GIF files, this is becoming the new standard for web graphics.
